The home coffee brewing industry has undergone a rapid growth not seen since the halcyon days of Mr. Coffee. The reason behind the sudden popularity in home brewing systems is the single-serve coffee maker. The biggest names in this new morning beverage “brandscape” are Keurig and Tassimo.

Single-serve coffee machines feature a non-drip brewing system that uses a small container holding a single serving of coffee, tea, or even hot chocolate. Keurig calls their single-serve portion packs, “K-Cups”, and they feature many popular gourmet brands, including Emeril, Newman’s Own, and Ghirardelli. Drinkers find the convenience of the K-Cups to be preferable than the old-fashioned coffee brewing world of cans, filters and used coffee grounds. The Keurig B40 is one of their most popular models, with a suggested retail price under $100.

The removable drip tray offers two conveniences: ease of cleaning, and the ability to use taller travel mugs in the B40. The water reservoir is 48oz which allows it to hold 6 cups for future brewing needs.

K-Cups and Cakes, K-Cups and Cakes

A single-serve home brewing system is only as good as its portion packs, and Keurig does not disappoint with hundreds of gourmet coffees, teas, and hot chocolates available in K-Cup packs. The K-Cup is a self-contained mini-brewer that locks out anything that could spoil the beverage’s flavor or freshness.

All types of coffee are available in the K-Cup format, from the boldest dark roast, all the way to decaffeinated light brew. Many popular brands are included, like Caribou Coffee, Green Mountain, and Bellaccino. Organic coffee, Arabica coffee – whatever the type; it’s probably available in a K-Cup.

Tea-lovers also won’t be disappointed with the breadth of selections available with Celestial Seasonings, Gloria Jean’s and Timothy’s popular tea brands all available in the K-Cup format. Hot Chocolate fans have Ghirardelli as an alluring option.

Accessories for the Keurig B40

Many accessories are available for the Keurig single-serve brewer. There are different storage options for K-Cups and their boxes: carousels, racks, etc. Keurig even includes a My K-Cup for coffee fans that want to use their own favorite brew in a K-Cup format.

An external water filtration system is also available for folks that want the cleanest tasting water possible for their hot beverage. If one already owns a Brita or other water filter, this accessory probably won’t be necessary.

A Convenient Cup o’ Joe

The Keurig B40 is an excellent brewer and a perfect introduction to the world of single-serve coffee makers. It brings gourmet quality coffee, tea, and hot chocolate home with an elegant convenience.
